so that was my weekend. things i did:

  • had a stack of wheat pancakes and met a waitress who gained 68 lbs when she was preggers. (she looks to weigh about 100 now) decided pregnancy might not be for me.
  • tried to play with a cat like i would with a dog. he wasn't having it.
  • read about a million craigslist apt ads. was sold on apts ranging in rent from 1200 to 5200. dangerous. also found one that looked like a cabana/jungle gym.
  • spilled scrambled eggs and water all over maria's futon
  • went to ad hoc gallery and saw a great show. also saw tags of people i love and people i hate on the street outside.
  • convinced maria that it would be ok to live in bushwick. was told we would not be living on knickerbocker no matter how cute the name.
  • tried to visit murakami exhibit at BMA but the line was 10 miles long and we didn't have much time. so all i have is a pic of me standing in entrance hall. i.e. i'm lame. whatevs, i'll be back.
  • went to concert in park slope. listened to a bunch of old people and thought i was in some sort of pretentious film. also heard maria toot on her clarinet and it was nice. yay mozart.
  • went to zanzibar while dressed like a 9 year old in chucks, celtics shirt and a hoodie. all the other girls were dressed cute. good thing i'm ok w/ myself.
  • used the word 'fance' about a million times. instead of fancy. i think its my new thing.
  • ate a giant slice of apple pie around 2am. deliciously dumb idea. got sick about 10 min later.
  • ate lunch in central park by myself. worked on my tan. decided i love nyc and want to live there, but def not in manhattan.
  • wandered around some shops buying things i don't need. cos i just love to throw money away.
  • ate at maison which is like the fake parisian place we ate at in vegas. so its a double fake. was good though.
  • saw g.r.l. flick at the moma. cracked up multiple times. also was moved by art. cos i'm weird. made plans to make some stuff for maria's b-day. saw panel. more love for the grl crew. went to after party and dug javelin but didn't dig the smelly hipsters all around.
  • fell into bed at 11p, woke up at 530a, took long long train ride into manhattan, ate two krispy kreme donuts, got on acela and am now headed back to boston.

the wall in cambridge

time to start stealing

here's a shot from my visit to the wall in cambridge, right off of mass ave. over the past few weeks a ton of local and non-local artists have come by and put up their work courtesy of an art guy (www.not-rocket-science.com/) and a restaurant guy (www.enormous.tv). awesome move to take street art and make it accessible, legal, and collaborative.

i only found that this event was even occurring due to my random contacts on flickr. other street artist and street art fans all collecting and sharing their work over there. i saw a flyer for it listed on someone else's page. coincidence that i was even in boston this weekend. after a weekend of eagles, celtics and sox games, i finally got my butt in gear and made it over to the location. i could not convince any of my friends to go with me. so sad. why are none of my friends into graffiti? i need to find a few street art friendly friends.

so yeah. it was kinda chilly but the sun was shining brightly. i got to spend a while taking it all in, cos it was definitely overwhelming at first. the work of over 20 artists all piled on top of each other. the alley where the art was is under a canopy of colored plates which added a different layer onto the already brightly decorated wall.

while i was there some of the artists were hanging out, adding some finishing touches and pasting up a few more layers. of course, because i'm a loser, i didn't talk to anyone. i just walked around taking pictures and soaking it up. it was fun to have the work of all these guys and girls that i spot around boston all showing up in a single place. the city does really need to have more installations like this. san antonio too. i think san antonio does a big show every couple years whereas boston is definitely lacking, but this was a good step forward. if i ever get my act together i'd definitely love to help organize something like this. of course, then i'd really have a reason to talk to the artists and say something more intelligent than, 'awesome piece, dude!'

because the alley is a main walkway in central square, lots of people encountered the work on there way to somewhere else. retired couples, families, businessmen and street kids all walked through the alley while i was there. and at least half of them stopped to take a closer look or snap a picture with their cellphone. beyond satisfying street art junkies like me, this is why i love exhibitions- it helps other people encounter and appreciate street art that they might otherwise not stop to pay attention to. i saw a little boy staring with his mouth wide open and then tracing his finger along one stencil. an older woman walking with her husband stopped to rub her hand over a pasteup, getting a real 'feel' for the art as it was hung. it all made me happy.

many thanks to the organizers and artists who participated in this exhibition. it was totally awesome and definitely a highlight to my weekend. even though time wise, much of my weekend was spent hanging out with great friends watching sporting events, the 30 minutes or less i spent alone in an alley staring at paint dry - that was probably my favorite. i'm just weird that way.

UPDATE: ok. so the boston red sox winning the world series around midnight. also a favorite part of my weekend. for sure. yay sox!!! my fan-dom has definitely increased since the last one back in my college days. phenomenal.

nyc graffiti and flickr and moving

i went to nyc this past weekend to hang with my girlies, maria and kel, and just wander around manhattan. and we went to the bronx and astoria. lots of traveling. walked a lot, did some minor shopping, and mostly just hung with the girls. we were all kind of tired and poopy but just laying around maria's place petting sphinx is fun. almost like the mod... only not.

anyways. during my wanderings i took some pictures of nice graf in soho. and now they're on flickr...

i've been digging graffiti for a quite a while and my interest has increased significantly in the past few years. i now constantly scope the streets for new pieces and point them out to my family and friends.

walking down a city street (and even driving down a country road) can always be interesting and art filled. for me graffiti is a great modern art form. i'm sure people have been tagging up walls for ages, scratching their names in trees and under desks. since the 1980s tagging and wall art has flourished across the US, both legally and illegally.

i appreciate it every day. each morning on my drive to work through allston, ma i'm able to graffiti-spot for a couple of blocks before i get on the highway. on trips away i spend time wandering around neighborhoods just looking for something different. graf is totally public art in its rawest form.

when i find these interesting pieces and i take pictures of them. i have gigs worth of pictures of street art. pasteups, tags and stencils. if i see it, i like it and my camera's handy i like to catch a pic before it gets painted over or washed away. another great thing about street art is it's limited lifespan. because these pieces are thrown up on walls allover the cities, they come and go at the will of the people. so communal. even if the community police try to wipe them out... all part of the circle. by taking a picture i have that piece captured on my hard drive even if someone else eventually/inevitably paints over it.

so anyways.

i take a lot of pictures and i like to show them to people. so i've turned to flickr as my website of choice for sharing my pictures with people i know and people i don't. opening up my graffiti archives for the world wide web to see.

flickr is a great place for tagging and searching pictures. through this foto-friendly community i've found pages of some of my favorite artists. the fact that i can take photos of these seemingly anonymous pieces, put them up on the site, and then have artists wander around and claim them as their own is fantastic. another benefit is that i'm able to wander around the collections of my fellow graf-lovers and see where they've been and what has caught their eyes.

it's like a team effort to photo and id all these artist around the world. a giant easter egg hunt, if you will, on the streets and on the sites. surprises around every corner, and yet sometimes, nothing interesting at all.

now i'm rambling.

whoops.

anyways. i love graffiti. flickr is a great site for fotos. and my new camera add-on's are in the mail. yay! new filters and a hood by the weekend - woohoo! i'll be back on the streets and snapping away asap.

right after i pack up my house. my tons and tons of crap.

our move date is 3 weeks away and my room/house is a dirty disaster. i need to get my booty in gear and packing. really. cos i'm moving. out of this house on aug 31. and to texas... sometime... semi-homeless for that middle part but no worries. no worries, no worries, it'll be ok.

---

i packed 3 boxes worth of books today. actually, rach packed one for me and cracked the whip to make me pack the other two. dang. 3 boxes of books packed up and still SO much stuff to go. this sucks.

one of my hobbies

i love to look at graffiti (in case u haven't noticed). it's kind of the most consistent and long-lasting hobby/interest i've ever had. blogging is probably a close second or third.

most people i know, particularly close friends and family, are aware of my love of street art. i periodically have tags and stencils as my desktop wallpaper at work. i take pictures of random graffiti i find while walking to lunch with my roommates. i even spent an evening showing my grandma banksy pictures in a book... and she was interested. getting other people interested or even understanding and less offended by graffiti is enjoyable for me. i also think it makes people be more appreciative and aware of their surroundings. noticing street art makes you look up to see the highest roof edges and low to the bottoms of streetlights which in turn just makes you LOOK. which is huge sometimes...

so while home in san antonio last week, my dad took me around to visit a couple of areas he'd spotted in his travels that he thought i'd be interested in. from a bridge underpass to a huge warehouse on the side of some railroad tracks, and a jogging path in the park- they were all great. after posting some pictures, getting feedback and doing a bit of googling i found out that two of them were "clogged caps" locations. huge organized graffiti showcases. i remember reading about the clogged caps 3 movie a few years ago, probably in the san antonio current, and i was annoyed that i missed the showings they had. so while i still havent seen the movie, i'm glad i got to visit two sites in one day. and i'm glad events like clogged caps exist. (and also makes me think more opportunities like this would cause less need for stringent and annoying graf laws like what they're pushing for in SA right now.) i would love to attend one of these next time around. really. it'd be awesome and so smelly.

here's an article i found about the event last year, for your education and my history: http://www.austinundergroundfilm.com/2006/08/12/clogged-caps-5-aerosol-art-fest/

-- on a different note --

show i love: workout. i started watching it with my mom last summer. last saturday on the plane i watched like 3 hours worth. (oh jetblue and bravo marathons!) brian, one of the trainers, is adorable. he's so country-cute and jock-y. even if he is balding- love it. none of the trainers at my gym are as country as him. if they were, i might go more often. :p

up and at 'em

since i went to sleep at 7p last night, i was wide awake at 730am this morn. i always plan on getting up early on saturday to take pictures, so today i finally did it.

it was pretty mild out this morn and early enough that not too many people were out. i definitely got to see some cool stuff and take my time looking around.

while in an alley taking this awesome headshot, a guy stopped to watch me and then talk. he said he was friends with some artist and talked about a recent graffiti show called 'freight' at the store right around the corner. i had read about it somewhere, and now i'm mad i didn't check it out. it was a bunch of miniature trains painted up w/ graffiti. man. anyways, this guy was drunk (at 8am) and asked if i wanted to grab a drink w/ him at wonderbar right then. 'cos he owned the place.' sketch. it was a funny convo and i would legitimately like to talk to him, since he did know stuff/people, but not an 8am drink. no thanks.

so yeah. productive morning. then i got breakfast at mickey d's and came home to pick up the dog and take him for a walk. yosh. always entertaining.

next time i want to take a trip down to the train yards to take pictures. only i'm afraid of hobos and um, train-yard people. i might need to take someone along with me for that one...

for boston, for boston

this city kills me. everytime i think the mayor cant sound any dumber w/ his hardcore accent. then he got in a big giant tizzy over this little guy.
a guerilla marketing campaign caused the city to freak out thinking it was a terrorist bomb scare an they spent $750,000 on this "hoax". only it wasnt a hoax, they weren't trying to scare people. it was just a marketing scheme. some graffiti.

there was one of these pieces just a couple blocks from my house. i must've driven past it at least 3 or 4 times. and i never saw it. boo.

i know the outrageousness reaction by massachusetts and boston police was ridic but partially understandable in light of 9/11 etc, i guess. and turner should have said something. sooner. in advance of the whole thing, gotten permits or something... both sides are at fault.

the two (or more) guys who actually did it and got hauled into jail over night, its not their fault. but they're making a good show of it. smiling during their court hearing and having a press conference about 70s hairstyles. great performance art. oh boston.

the smart kids selling shirts and stickers on ebay, saying up yours and 1-31-07, with a nice little mooninite flicking off the world. they're awesome. i was actually thinking about it on the way home when talking to my dad. but actually, what i want to make is a bit more... public and illegal. cannot disclose. obvs.

anyways. tried out soulfire for dinner and it was ok. grey's was great today and iska and i screamed a lot.

also, mini freakout. its february first. already 2nd month of 2007. gee whiz time is passing slowly. 5 more months and i'll be 24. officially out of my early 20s and into my mid 20s. thats disgusting.

but on a good note. i tried to get lily allen tix last week, but i was mad about ticketbastards surcharges, so i didnt buy them. then i finally decided- actually, i am willing to pay for my lily allen obsession- i go to buy tix and they're sold out. i was so mad at myself. and ppl were selling them on craigslist and ebay for $50. wtf. lame. but today i went on to ticketbastard.com just to check. and turns out they opened it up some more. yay. i bought two. ellen's going with me. yay. feb18 i can sing along and act like i'm 14. awesome.

what good roomates i have. grey's watchers and concert goers. whoop. and rachael is always willing to try out my baking and cooking experiments. :)

stencil to skin- i want.

i've wanted a tattoo for pretty much ever. i want the lone star. i wanted it on my wrist but thats not very pc. and ankles are whack. foot? professional?

dont know.

then, in mid december during one of my banksy photo searches i came across the girl with a heart balloon that is one of his wall stencils. most of his stuff is controversial and irreverent, which is why i like him so much. this one just seems so sweet. i love it. i've made it my desktop wall paper and i already told my brother that that's what i want tattooed on me.

tonight i'm watching miami ink on tlc (i love ami, as i love all bald men...) and this girl was getting tattooed on her side and i thought, hmm, that's a good spot. i like it. that's where i want to get my banksy balloon girl. then, i decided to do a google search, just to see who else out there has gotten a banksy tattoo. and wouldn't you know it, i found two of them. so i definitely wont be the first. (the girl on the bottom got hers sometime in 2005 and the guy in dec 2006) but i still like it. and now i've seen it proven on skin. hmmm...
